Letter from the Principal

Welcome!

It is my pleasure to welcome you to St Lucy School for the 2020-21 school year! As I begin my first school year as Principal at St. Lucy, I am energized and deeply committed to making a positive difference in the lives of your children. We will accomplish this by setting high academic expectations for all children and providing supportive systems to assure they are met. By focusing on a positive school culture, setting high standards for teacher performance, increasing academic expectations for all students, and engaging the community, all St. Lucy students will be prepared for a bright and successful future!

While all of those aspects are important, the safety and health of your students and our staff is our top priority right now. We have been working hard to get everything ready to welcome students back into the building! I understand that the decision to select virtual learning or traditional in-person learning is highly personal and dependent on the unique circumstances your family faces. We are committed to supporting you and your students the best that we can. We also want to make sure that you have all the information you need to make an informed decision about your child’s placement this fall.

Here at St. Lucy, the entire staff will go through training during our pre-service days on special routines and procedures that will need to be followed during the school day to keep students safe. Some other precautions and procedures that will take place to ensure the safety of your student during the school day are:

-Only students and staff will be allowed into the building before, during, and after school to limit exposure. If a student needs to leave early, you can call the office and the student will be brought out to the car by school personnel.

-Teachers will be taking their classes outside as much as possible to learn.

-Bathroom breaks will be done as a class at an assigned time. Students are encouraged to use the bathroom then, but will also be able to go in an emergency outside of that time.

-There will be an increased number of lunch periods to ensure that students will be seated 6 ft. away from each other. There will be a designated door for students to enter and one for them to exit.

-There will also be an increased number of recesses. Only one class will be able to go outside at a time.

I know there are many challenges right now during these uncertain times, but I want to reassure you that we are going to do our very best to keep your students safe, happy, and healthy should you choose to send them to school. Our remarkable staff, involved parents, and committed students will come together to make St. Lucy’s a wonderful, safe, and unique place.

In closing, please know that my door is always open to you. I heartily welcome your conversation and positive input throughout this year. Let us always keep our students the primary focus of our work. The best way to contact me currently is by email: sthostenson@sienacatholicschools.org. I will respond as quickly as I can, but always within 24 hours. I look forward to celebrating our collective successes during the 2020-21 school year.
